Approachability - Your Socials, Your Say! 🙋

Having worked in event planning, we know that the attendees are what make the event memorable! We want you all to feel comfortable, make new friends and most importantly enjoy the events you’re attending. After all, Socials is a portfolio FOR students, so we believe you should have a say in the events being organised, rather than having everything decided for you!

That is why we’re committed to introducing at least one open Socials meeting per semester. We want to create the opportunity for every student to meet the team, gain insight into the planning process and pitch their own ideas. Whether it be a Vic Park Olympics or Welcome Back drinks, the avenues to bringing students together are endless and we’d love to hear what you want to attend!! We’ll also be introducing a feedback form after events to hear what you liked, what you didn’t and how we can improve for the next one.

We also recognise that not everyone's social battery is charged by the same type of event. Some prefer a big night out, while others enjoy a morning pilates class. We want to create a social calendar that reflects and accounts for the different interests and preferences of our student body, and we want you to be aware of that calendar. Too many events get lost in the grid, so we want to introduce an accessible and detailed e-calendar for SULS Socials that allows members to understand when, where and what events are coming up so that there’s no excuse to not get involved!!

We both genuinely love the time we get to spend with all of you and we want to bring that same feeling into every event we have the privilege to run! That’s why APPROACHABILITY is such a big part of our policy promises.

Diversity - Beyond the Law Bubble! 🤝

Coming from a cross JD/LLB background, we understand all too well that our law degree is a big common factor. Yet there’s so much more that connects us beyond the law bubble!! Whether it's undergraduate degrees for JDs, combined degrees for LLBs, sporting interests, hobbies or general shared experiences, every student brings something different to the SULS community, and we want to celebrate that!

That’s why DIVERSITY is another key pillar of our campaign. We want to broaden the scope of Socials by introducing more cross-faculty and inter-society collaborations, creating opportunities for students to connect over interests which extend beyond the law. Whether it’s a joint mixer with another faculty, a social sporting competition or a collaboration with one of the University’s many societies, we want to make it easier to meet people who share your interests, both within and outside Sydney Law School.

Of course this doesn’t mean saying goodbye to all the classics! First Year Camp, Welcome Drinks and Law Ball are signature events for a reason and we are dedicated to continuing the traditions that make the SULS social calendar so memorable, making them bigger and better!

Community - Let Your SULS Shine! ☀️

This is probably our most ambitious policy, but it’s also the one we’re most excited about! Introducing Off the Record! An initiative designed to celebrate the interests, hobbies and passions that make each of us unique outside of the courtroom, while bringing our law school community closer together. We recognise that there's so much more to each of us than our law degrees, and we want to create opportunities for students to express that individuality! Whether you're passionate about food, fitness, music, reading or something completely different, we believe that sharing these interests is one of the best ways to form genuine friendships and create lasting memories at university.

Following the enthusiasm surrounding initiatives such as the SULS Book Club and Run Club, introduced in 2026, we want to build on this momentum by offering a greater variety of creative, sporting and interest-based social groups within SULS. We’re looking to be guided by your interests but some nascent ideas include a weekly spin group, a foodies group chat, an artists community, and a SULS band! We've already seen the incredible friendships and sense of belonging fostered through communities such as Law Revue and Competitions, where students come together through shared interests and experiences. We want to bring that same sense of community to the Socials portfolio through the introduction of these smaller, student-driven groups that give everyone the opportunity to find their people, pursue their passions and discover new ones! Most importantly, we don’t want these initiatives to feel like just another event. Rather, we’ll be utilising new group chats, hosting events and making it feel like its own little community in SULS.

And you certainly don't need to be an expert to get involved! Whether you're bonding over an existing passion or making a new friend while trying something for the first time, we want these groups to be welcoming, accessible and, above all, FUN!

Both of us have experienced firsthand how much the people you meet can shape your time at law school. Through Off the Record!, we hope to create even more opportunities for those connections to happen naturally, while celebrating the diverse personalities and interests that make our community so special. Considering the two of us likely wouldn’t have crossed paths without SULS, we really believe in the potential of these initiatives to form lasting friendships like we have in each other!! We both have really found a place in SULS through the people and are so so excited to have the opportunity to give back by helping others do the same, and we hope that you can trust us with the privilege of that responsibility.
