Increasing Accessibility!
We will be working with experienced competitors to develop comprehensive YouTube how-to resources. These videos will not just demonstrate how to do the comp, but will also include strategies and recommendations that help supplement the current Education Programs. We will continue to develop the Comps Intermediate Program, which gives competitors who are experienced in internal, but not IV, competitions the chance to work with a mentor and to practise against existing IV teams. A more comprehensive structure will be implemented to help demystify the IV process for curious students in a way that is equally beneficial to our IV competitors. Finally, education resources for mentors will be updated to provide more support for our incredible mentors, to more accurately reflect recommended strategies and rules, and to improve the quality of our mentoring programs.
Consistency and Fair Play!
We want to revamp the SULS Competition rules to make clear what counts as acceptable use of AI and of working with peers. We will consult with senior competitors (and staff) to determine to what extent we wish to allow such practices. The most important outcome, though, is that there is clarity on what is and isn’t fair play! Furthermore, we will refine the SULS Competitions rules to more accurately reflect certain customary rules for the sake of external judges (for example, allowing the witness in WitEx to read off their script). To avoid frustrating scenarios where competitors receive conflicting feedback from judges, we will update the Judging Guidelines so that judges receive clearer instructions with regard to marking expectations, and competitors enjoy consistency in their Comps experience.
Making Sure Our Competitors SHINE!
Our passion and love for the Comps community means that we care so deeply about seeing our competitors shine! We will continue to expand opportunities for competitors in the IV space, such as the UNSW IV Client Interviewing and AULSS Negotiations competitions. We will support IV and international competitors further by better coordinating their spaces for practices and training, and ensuring that these competitors have the best resources available to them to compete at the highest level. For competitors looking to make their way to the international stage, we will also enhance resources, both digital and in-person, to make it clearer how pathways to international competitions can manifest!
Supporting the Comps Portfolio!
We know that no part of a Comps role is ‘easy’, from judging, to convening, to being on the Senior Committee. We want to make work for our convenors easier by creating a comprehensive handbook that tracks the convening timeline with templates and tips. We will investigate introducing a Resources Coordinator to assist in developing problem questions and providing IV teams with better practice resources. To address the current gaps of inefficiency in the competing process, we will introduce quarter-finals for WitEx and streamline the process for finding dummy teams in Negotiations. Finally, we want to make sure EVERYONE is included, so we’ll be running more super fun Comps socials that include not only the Senior Committee but also our convenors and competitors!
