Playing by the Rules: The Legal Side of Sport (Sports Law Panel)
Building on the work of the current Sports Director and subcommittee, I aim to connect Sydney Law students with professionals working at the intersection of law and sport. As sport becomes increasingly commercialised, esports continues to grow, and elite women’s sport expands across Australia and internationally, sports law is an exciting and rapidly evolving field with significant appeal to law students. I hope to organise a panel featuring professionals from diverse backgrounds who can share insights into the development of sports law, the opportunities within the industry, and potential career pathways.
The Final Whistle: Examining the Law Beyond the Game (Sports Law Journal)
As Sports Director and in collaboration with Publications, I will establish a semesterly Sports Law Journal exploring contemporary issues such as athlete rights, sports governance, anti-doping, employment disputes, and commercial sponsorship. By inviting contributions from students, academics, and industry professionals, my vision is to establish a sustainable, student-led publication that positions SULS as a hub for discussion at the intersection of law and sport.
Alongside the semesterly journal, I will publish a monthly Instagram feature that complements the journal by highlighting the real-world experiences of professional athletes, including a Wallabies player, an Olympic and Commonwealth Games gymnast, and several professional tennis players. These posts will explore their experiences with contracts, media, and other aspects of professional sport, alongside short analyses of legal issues arising at the intersection of sport and current affairs.
Come for the Game, Stay for the Banter (social sport watch parties)
As Sports Director, I want to bring the SULS community together beyond the classroom by introducing social sporting watch parties for major Australian and international sporting events. From the AFL Grand Final and State of Origin to the tennis Grand Slams, FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Rugby World Cup, these events offer a fantastic opportunity for students to connect, whether passionate sports fans or those who have never watched a game in their lives. My goal is to create an inclusive and relaxed atmosphere where students can take a break from their studies, build friendships across year groups, and experience the excitement of major sporting moments together.
The Court Is in Session (Pickleball competition/tennis clinic)
In collaboration with Campus, I want to bring a fresh sporting initiative to SULS by launching a semesterly social pickleball tournament that adds a little friendly rivalry to the law school calendar. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or have never picked up a paddle, pickleball is an easy and fun way to get involved, test your skills, and challenge your classmates outside the lecture theatre. As Sports Director, I hope to build a competition that students can look forward to each semester, complete with prizes and plenty of opportunities for bragging rights.
Additionally, as a tennis player and coach, I want to make tennis more accessible to the SULS community by introducing a bi-weekly tennis clinic catering to players of all skill levels. Whether you’re picking up a racquet for the first time or looking to refine your game, the clinics will provide an opportunity to develop your game in a supportive and welcoming environment. As Sports Director, I aim to organise sessions that balance coaching, skill development, and fun and friendly match play. By making tennis more approachable and providing a regular opportunity to get on court, I hope to encourage more students to try something new, improve their skills, and discover a lasting passion for the sport!
A New Precedent in SULS Style
I will launch a SULS Student Design Competition, inviting students to submit original designs for an official SULS rugby jersey or jumper. This initiative will give students the opportunity to showcase their creativity and create merchandise that reflects the identity and spirit of the Sydney law school community. The winning design will be featured on the official jersey or jumper, giving students a tangible way to leave their mark on SULS and fostering a stronger sense of community, pride, and participation beyond the classroom.
