More Fun, More Community

Mark your campus calendars for free monthly socials! Rock up to trivia nights, social sports, and inter-cohort mixers! Shine understands the importance of consistent events in building a stronger cohort community, which is why we’re introducing fortnightly meetings with cohort representatives to plan free, cohort-specific meetups at least once a semester. Think end-of-exam drinks, unit-specific panels, and cross-cohort games! Shine recognises that mid-year and transfer students haven’t had the warm welcome most others had, so count on us to work with Internationals and Socials to deliver “Second-Semester Welcome”, including a calendar of post-lecture events, cross-cohort picnics, and a welcome back party.

Shine highlights that coordination between portfolios can significantly reduce resource overlaps and event oversaturation, in turn allowing us to host more free events for you. By coordinating SULS events with the university timetable, we’ll make it easier to attend the events you care about without having to choose between a lecture and a SULS panel. Beyond social events, look forward to a new seminar series exploring contemporary challenges, alongside charity initiatives such as a Gig Night showcasing the creative talents of our faculty! Shine will introduce the inter-cohort mentoring programme earlier in S1, where we’ll organise structured meetups such as karaoke night, picnic on the Vic, or mentor-mentee coffee! By connecting students across year levels, we hope to foster a community where students can share study strategies and support one another through the challenges of university life.

Wellbeing in Centre Frame

Shine believes that better wellbeing starts with small, everyday actions. We’ll reduce your mental load of the SULS calendar by coordinating announcements across the newsletter and website, and a fortnightly summary on Instagram! Look forward to a redesigned Wellbeing Week that goes beyond coffee and gelato! From a wellbeing in law industry panel and a seminar unpacking media fatigue, to a breathwork & yoga session, we’re bringing you fresh ways to pause, recharge, and reset. We’ll collaborate across portfolios to design events addressing various challenges students face, from coastal walks/pilates through Sports, mental health panels with Queer, conversations about loneliness with International, and table talks with Women. Working alongside the Disabilities Portfolio, we’ll further promote awareness of resources and services available on campus through dedicated chats and workshops. During exam weeks, count on us to organise study break sessions in the Law office, complete with tea, biscuits, and free study resources.

Network of Accountability

Shine believes that a stronger SULS starts with listening to its members and holding ourselves accountable to their voices. We’ll strengthen student representation by involving cohort representatives in SULS executive meetings, highlighting your reps as a channel for concerns to be tabled and discussed. We’ll introduce a monitored feedback form on an updated SULS website, creating a clear channel for you to raise concerns and share ideas; we’ll regularly review feedback, refer concerns to the relevant portfolio or faculty where appropriate, and communicate resulting actions back to you. Shine is committed to clearer governance and greater budget transparency, so you can better understand how decisions are made and how your contributions are put to use. Campus, as a portfolio coordinator, will advocate for initiatives that represent and support all members of our faculty, including international students, mature students, women, First Nations students, and queer students.

Tabs, Tabs, Tabs!

No Taste? No problem, your beloved Coffee Tabs are here to stay, upgraded! We’ll work with local caterers to deliver a fresh variety of offerings, think Gelato Carts (Messina! MAPO!), breakfast spreads, and substantial canapés. In addition to corporate firm sponsors, we’re excited to introduce events with boutique firms & non-profit legal centres, broadening your exposure to the legal industry and opening doors to a wider range of career pathways. We also recognise that conventional clerkship pathways aren’t accessible to everyone, particularly many international students, and hope to build partnerships that create more opportunities for graduate pathways and practical work experience for all.

As part of our initiative to revamp the SULS office to be approachable as a space to relax, we’re treating you to a year of tea, on us, anytime during our office hours! Bring your mug, we’ll brew you a cuppa, and we’re down for a chat anytime!
